The Chakravarthy family was going on a family picnic to Channapatna. There are 6 people in the family, and unfortunately, I'm one of them.
My 'great' father Raj Chakravarthy was driving out Toyota Innova. Everyone was in a jolly mood. Everyone, but me. I mean, going on a picnic with the world's worst family! What do you expect?I had my 18 year old sister, Aleisha, sitting next to me texting her boyfriend, Rahul, throughout the journey. Next to her was my grandmother, talking about her death. My mother was sitting next to the driver's seat going on and on about the nutritional facts of bitter gourd. My father was driving the car while talking to my 10 year old brother, Rohan, about cricket. And me, Aisha, stuck between them.
Everything was going 'all fine' until the car broke down. Everyone fell silent. 2 seconds later, everyone was shouting. My mother started shouting at my father saying it was his fault. My father started shouting at my mother to speak logically. My sister started shouting about not being able to talk to Rahul because of no network. My grandmother said, "Beta, I think this is God's way of telling me my time has come." I screamed about how stupid my family was.
Suddenly, my father exclaimed, "Okay! Enough Chakravarthys! I will fix the car." "Yeah right!" said my mother. "You had said you would fix the sofa back home when I was pregnant with Rohan. And guess what? You were U-N-S-U-C-E-S-S-F-U-L-L." "God! Go learn the spelling first." I muttered.
Soon, my father was trying to fix the car as well as trying to convince my mother not to call a mechanic. "Remote area? Seriously? We're stuck with a severely damaged car and an old and sick woman. Help us!" My mother was busy shouting at the mechanic. Meanwhile, Rohan was sitting in a corner with his playstuff trying to build a rocket to go home in. With no one to talk to, I ended up spending time with Aleisha. I still can't believe I did that.
Two and a quarter hours later, the mechanic who said would come, didn't. It was almost 3 in the afternoon. My grandmother was sleeping. My mother was tired but still kept cursing my father, who went nowhere on fixing the car. But his spirits were even higher than before.
Just then, a mysterious man, about 40 years of age, came and turned a few knobs, blew air here and there, dusted his hands and closed the lid of the hood and simply walked away, quietly. My father, who was at the trunk looking for a crowbar, came out and opened the hood again. Just as he was about to do something else, I stopped him. God knows what else he would have done. I suggested, "Why don't you go and start the car to check whether it's working or not, hmm?" "But the car isn't fixed yet." he said. "Just try." I said pointing at the car.
Turns out, the mystery man had fixed the car. "Hop in Chakravarthys! See Mona, I fixed the car!" My mother seemed pretty impressed. I was the only one who knew whose work it actually was, but I decided not to reveal it to anyone. I'll let my father enjoy his victory.
Rohan seemed disappointed that we didn't let him finish making his rocket. Aleisha stopped whining as she could now finally speak to Rahul. But not for long! Her phone died. My grandmother somehow related the death of the phone battery to her impending death. I soon fell asleep.
A mad family indeed!
